Saw this posted in one of the windows at UPLB Student Union building. At fist I thought.. sablay gradution? Whoever put this up has a strange sense of humor. Sablay? Sumablay ang graduation. Sablay means failure in tagalog so does it mean that someone failed to graduate and decided to put up a sign just like what my org mates did to me when I graduated way back in 1999. They posted a big tarpaulin that says.. " Esmie, at long last your a "magna" now... magna-9 years in college.."
Anyway, after a few minutes of alternately walking and running it dawned on me... "oh yeah... SABLAY... that Tausug piece of clothing that the people in UP Diliman has been wearing on top of their graduation dress (or barong for males) instead of toga for graduation. For UPians, it is a sign of academic achievement... being able to graduate from UP means endless, sleepless nights reviewing for exams, tears.. lots of them... a lot of dead brain cells.... a couple pints of blood... and a couple bottles of Gin (Ginebra pa nun chong.. wala pang redhorse nun) to numb the pain when you finally saw your class card in genetics. :(
Getting (or claiming) your own Sablay feels like... hmnn.... you feel vindicated... as simple as that.... HAH! Those professors didnt succeed in making you a part of the statistics of those who werent able to graduate....
The UP Diliman people had been wearing the sablay since 1999 and UP Los Banos peeps are proposing to do the same for this year's graduates...Yeah... I would proudly wear a sablay for my graduation (if I were graduating now instead of 13 years ago)
There's only one problem...
How about the hooding ceremony for CVM (College of Veterinary Medicine) gradutes?
Just a funny thought....
"hooded sablay, anyone?!"
